Craig on LayMyHat asked for an update on this and I did receive some further suggestions for more metrics for your email list:

- subscribe rate is useful - can you measure this against your other marketing to see what's working for attracting people to your list? e.g. does the subscribe rate go up when you tweet with useful stuff (not just updates on your coffee breaks...)

- demographics of your subscribers - e.g. country and time zone. Where are you being most effective in finding people?

- bounce rates - which email addresses are you getting through to successfully? If you are hitting certain ones repeatedly and they are not being opened, it's probably time to delete them
